The NJTOD.org and Downtown New Jersey invite you to a panel discussion among experts who have been on the front lines in taking TOD from planning to completion. Hear from elected officials, planners, and developers working in New Jersey about their experiences and understand how to:
- Engage the community
- Craft realistic goals
- Put together a good project
- Be a good partner
- Plan for success
- Overcome challenges
- Use TOD to redevelop NJ’s downtowns
Transit-Oriented Development concentrates development around transit facilities, most commonly near train stations, but also near bus, light rail, or other public transit station. Development is typically mixed-use and dense, providing residents, workers, and visitors amenities in close proximity. The goal of TOD is to create livable and sustainable places where people can live, work, and play all in the same community, without requiring the use of a car.
TOD can provide many benefits to communities. Because of its emphasis on dense, mixed-use development, residents, workers, and visitors are able to easily walk or bike to home, work, and recreation. Attractive, community-oriented downtowns with cultural and recreational amenities encourage residents and workers to spend money in the community and invites visitors who contribute to the community’s economic vitality.

Published since 2005, the NJTOD.org (aka the Transit-Friendly Development Newsletter) is designed to keep municipal officials, planners, and advocates up-to-date on the potential for development and redevelopment around transit stations. This partnership between NJ TRANSIT and the Bloustein School’s Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center (VTC) at Rutgers University aims to enrich the TOD conversation in New Jersey’s diverse communities by highlighting what is happening in the state and around the country: best practices, model programs, legislation, and local problem-solving experiences.
